YouTube Traffic Experiment

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Objectives: To be able to determine the level of popularity, confidence and web host reliability of YouTube as a resource/multimedia facility.

Target Website: YouTube ( http://www.youtube.com/ )

What is YouTube?
YouTube was founded in February 2005 and has become one of the most popular web portals in the world. Allowing users to submit videos and wade through the massive video section by searching for keywords, YouTube has taken the idea of viral videos to a new level. (http://webtrends.about.com/od/profi3/p/what-is-youtube.htm)

What Should I Use YouTube?
As the premier video hosting and sharing website, YouTube has something for everyone. From comedy spoofs to movie clips to music videos, if it has been on video it is probably on YouTube. (http://webtrends.about.com/od/profi3/p/what-is-youtube.htm)

Beyond just watching videos, YouTube can empower your blog by allowing you to upload videos and place them on your blog using the YouTube widget. (http://webtrends.about.com/od/profi3/p/what-is-youtube.htm)

Methodology:
1. A total of 6 hours will be consumed for this experiment. Every 2 hours, the group is required to watch 20 videos and gather information about it. Hence, 20 video links were gathered by the group leader from this link below which posted most recent videos arranged in the time sequence of upload: http://www.youtube.com/browse?s=mr.
2. 20 videos every two hours (07:00 PM - 09:00 PM) of three consecutive days (7/13/09, 7/14/09, and 7/15/09) are watched by the group. Data about each video is gathered on a single excel file accessible through this link: Access me!
3. Data were consolidated to facts and findings based on the data.

Probabilities

Probability that an uploader is above 16 years old: 41/60 or 0.683 = 68.3%
Probability that an uploader is not willing to indicate their age: 13/60 or 0.217 = 21.7%

Probability that a recent video is in English: 31/60 or 0.5167 = 51.7%
Probability for a recent video to be marked as favorite: 7/60 or 0.1166 = 11.6%

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Facts about the experiment:
1. Level of popularity of YouTube was highest in Europe.
2. English is the most commonly used language in almost all recently uploaded videos.
3. Asia ranks third in video uploads in YouTube.
4. Most uploaders range in the age of 14 years old - 35 years old (Teenagers & Young Adults). (Based on Provisional Guidelines on Standard International Age Classifications - http://unstats.un.org/unsd/publication/SeriesM/SeriesM_74e.pdf)
5. Music category ranks first in all recently uploaded videos.

Findings about the experiment:
1. Level of popularity of YouTube is highly dependent on the accessibility of computer technology by different countries.
2. Universality of the English language made it qualify to be the medium for most video upload in YouTube.
3. Asia ranks third in video upload in YouTube.
4. Nowadays, most computer users are teenagers & young adults. This is the reason why video uploads in YouTube are mostly done by people under this age classification.
5. Music serves to be the reason for most upload.
6. YouTube is a good online learning resource over the We
b.
7. YouTube is a good and reliable multimedia resource for music and entertainment.

8. YouTube has a good user participation (Web 2.0) application with regards to shared multimedia information.

9. YouTube has high level of confidence in terms of all forms of informational resource.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Conclusion:
In our experiment, we had realized that YouTube is one of the most commonly used online resource. Reliability and confidence of it in terms of shared multimedia information is high since it allows total user participation and feedback. Its filtering system is also good making it popularly recognized worldwide.

Six Degrees of Separation Theory

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Objectives: To be able to prove Six Degrees of Separation Theory and analyze it based from quantifiable data gathered from the experiment.

Target Respondents: Students

Qualifications of Respondents:
1. Must be a DLSU-CCS student.
2. Must be enrolled in BS-INSYS.
3. Must be from the batch 108.
4. Must be from S13, S14, S15, or S22.

Methodology:
1. Block pictures from S13, S14, S15, S22 using Facebook were posted.
2. Respondents were asked to comment their relationships with the person/s in any block pictures.
3. Connections were mapped in a paper.
4. Each student that is marked as subject for the experiment were tracked with the number of degree connections it can reach.
5. Trials were done to track realization of the Six Degrees of Separation Theory.

Facts about the experiment:
1. There are a total of 20 comments being posted.
2. The experiment lasted for 5 days.
3. There are a total of 44 students marked as subjects for the experiment.
4. There are a total of 171 students in all four (4) block pictures.
5. An average of at least 4 persons has connection with respondents.
6. An average of 3 degrees was reached by most trials for realizing the theory.
7. There are 44 trials made to prove the theory.
8. Only 1 trial was successful on proving the Six Degrees of Separation theory.

Result:
Six Degrees of Separation Theory = TRUE
Probability for Success: 1/44 or 0.0227 = 2.3%
Probability for Failure: 43/44 or 0.9772 = 97.7%

Evaluation & Conclusion:
In our experiment, the Six Degrees of Separation Theory was proven right. However, the result of this experiment shows that there is only a low chance of probability for a degree of separation can reach as high as 6 degrees. Separation degree reaches
mostly up to 3 degrees and this holds a stronger probability than of the 6 degrees. Therefore, the success chance of proving the Six Degrees of Separation theory was low. For some group of people, it might not be true/applicable at all.
